Abstract Scope As traditional chromium-based corrosion resistant design systems have encountered more stringent environmental regulations, nanocomposite coatings have emerged as an attractive alternative in a variety of industrial sectors. Polyetherimide (PEI) polymer-based nanocomposite coatings have shown initial promise owing to their excellent barrier protection. Previous work revealed key fundamental design principles through a comprehensive investigation of corrosion protection mechanisms in a design that combined an imidized PEI resin with unfunctionalized exfoliated graphite (UFG) logjammed 2D material fillers below the percolation threshold to increase the tortuosity of ion diffusion pathways. In this work, PEI coatings with different molecular weights and isomer variations were deposited using an automated spray system. Corrosion inhibition was evaluated through coupling electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data with gel permeation chromatography (GPC), adhesion testing, and cross-sectional analysis of exposed coatings to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of corrosion protection as a function of molecular weight and isomer variance.
