Abstract Scope In our study, a prototype process is proposed for fabricating metal matrix composites. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is used for 3D printing of lattices made of 316L stainless steel, Ti6Al4V and Ni. These structures are then infiltrated with copper (CuCrZr) and aluminium powder (AlSi10Mg), melt through induction heating. Emphasis is given on the interface between LPBF structures and cast material, where elemental diffusion results in phase transformations, intermetallics phase formation and Kirkendall effect. CALPHAD modelling tracks the diffusion profiles and the kinetics of phase formation, coupled with experimental analysis, using EDS, XRD and EBSD mapping. For copper matrix composites, neutron based characterization techniques allow the CT tomography of printed structures, the 3D illustration of magnetic phases through polarized neutron imaging and the strain and texture mapping of the composites through Neutron Bragg Edge Imaging. Finally, the mechanical performace of the composites is evaluated through compression and nanohardness testing.
