Abstract Scope To effectively exploit the properties of multiple advanced materials at once in emerging technologies, joining of multi-materials is necessary. However, conventional joining processes introduce interfaces with discontinuous property changes, which can be deleterious. Using directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing (AM) of metals, smooth compositional gradients can be produced to alleviate these sharp transitions and locally tailor properties to avoid incompatibilities. In this study, the thermo-mechanical response of compositionally graded materials was investigated in DED gradient components between refractory (Ta, Nb or Mo) to lightweight (Ti) alloys to understand the microstructural evolution and influence on performance as a function of temperature and spatial distribution of compositions. SEM, EBSD, EDS, and TEM analyses were performed on materials before and after elevated-temperature mechanical testing to understand performance and inform process optimization. Prepared by LLNL under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344 and supported by the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program under project tracking code 23-ERD-034.
