Abstract Scope The properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) can surpass that of monolithic parts as FGMs’ composition and/or microstructure can be tailored locally to the environment it will encounter. However, designing composition gradients is difficult given material incompatibilities which can result in detrimental phase formation or cracking at specific compositions along the gradient. Given the large number of elements between two alloys, designing a composition path free of detrimental phases is cumbersome due to the highly complex composition space. A new framework that automates composition path planning for multicomponent alloys will be presented. It includes a robotics-inspired path planning algorithm, a phase classifier model, and cost functions to optimize for a detrimental phase-free path while ensuring monotonic properties or minimizing crack susceptibility.
