Abstract Scope |
Creating large-scale metal parts using wire-arc additive manufacturing entails creating a 3-dimensional model of a part, distilling this model down to a series of cross sections or “layers,” then using these cross sections to create toolpaths for a machine to read and then build the desired part. These layers are typically 2-dimensional, which limits the complexity of the toolpath and requires an extremely consistent arc-process. Instead of rigidly fixing the process parameters to achieve a flat layer, this analysis seeks to characterize a wide range of wire feed speeds and robot travel speeds to create a map of deposited bead widths and heights. This information will be used to inform toolpath generation for truly 3-dimensional layers, build increasingly complex parts, and to study the effects of a variable process on the microstructure of a printed part through imaging and mechanical material testing. |
