Abstract Scope |
The microstructure of 3D printed parts is influenced by thermal gradients, which in turn affects the macrostructure of the final product. Accurately predicting the mechanical properties and bonding quality of the printed product, as well as the strength of its individual parts, requires a comprehensive understanding of the thermal evolution over time. Therefore, this paper focuses on the thermal simulation of the Material Extrusion (MEX) process using Mechanical Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL). The nozzle diameter of 0.4 mm was selected, and two materials were analyzed: Polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) and short carbon fiber reinforced PETG (at a weight percentage of 10%). Prior to analyzing the two materials, the simulation was validated by comparing the results to experimental thermal history data for a printed part. Thereafter, the thermal evolution of the two materials was compared using a thin wall structure. To enhance computational efficiency, a layer activation method was also implemented. |
