Abstract Scope |
Reactive binders have emerged as a promising solution to address the challenges of creep and distortion when sintering binder jet printed green parts. In this study, we investigate the impact of a specific reactive binder, aqueous titanium bis-ammonium lactato dihydroxide (TALH), on the microstructure and sintering mechanics of TiO2 printed powder aggregates. While TALH treatment does not change the creep mechanism, dilatometry measurements demonstrate that TALH-treated materials exhibit reduced creep compared to as-printed TiO2. Models of structural evolution in sintering powder compacts indicate that the primary effect of TALH on the creep response is an increase in interparticle contact size, while the coordination number remains relatively unchanged due to the low initial relative density. Insights from this work are used to compare different reactive binder compositions and develop generalized guidelines for designing reactive binders to mitigate creep, emphasizing the importance of a high solid yield during reactive binder decomposition. |
