Abstract Scope |
Solid oxide cells (SOCs) provide a mature alternative to conventional power-generation sources to achieve the EU carbon-neutrality goal for 2050. However, the full deployment of SOCs is still hindered by the lack of efficient, scalable and cost-effective end-of-life (EoL) strategies that enable managing and valorising waste products derived from cell operation and avoiding their disposal. The BEST4Hy project, funded by the European Union, aims at the development and validation of efficient and scalable recovery pathways for critical raw and hazardous materials including rare earth elements, from EoL SOCs in the view of their recycling and valorization. In this work, strategies for possible recycling routes of high-temperature SOC cell components (yttria, zirconia, Ni, La and Co materials) and cell re-manufacturing are presented and discussed. |
