Abstract Scope |
Iron-based foams can be utilized in metal-air batteries and chemical looping combustion for energy storage and conversion. Here, we demonstrate sustainable and facile manufacturing of Fe-W foams with hierarchical porosities via hydrogen reduction of oxides from freeze casting. Iron and tungsten oxide particles are suspended in aqueous solution to prepare a stable slurry, which is then directionally freeze-cast to obtain a lamellar Fe2O3-WO3 foam. These are reduced by pure hydrogen to form metallic Fe-W foams with micro- and nano-pores. We discuss the effect of alloying compositions on porous structures by varying W content; we also study reaction kinetics via in situ X-ray diffraction during the reduction process. Investigation of the reduction process is essential to understand the microstructural evolution of Fe-W foams during H2/H2O redox cycling at 800 °C. |
