Abstract Scope |
Steel is an indispensable asset for modern society. Although steel is the most recycled material, the growth in global demand cannot be satisfied only by recycling why iron ore based steel is needed for the foreseeable future. Current virgin steel production technologies run on fossil coal and natural gas and the steel industry accounts for approximately 7% of global CO2-emissions.
In 2016, SSAB together with mining company LKAB and energy company Vattenfall initiated the HYBRIT initiative, aiming at developing a distributed fossil free value chain from mine to steel, solving the root cause of CO2-emission. Extensive R&D efforts aimed at developing and validating the new process on a semi-industrial ‘pilot’ scale have been conducted. Based on the results, SSAB and LKAB have decided to accelerate the transformation to a fossil free iron and steelmaking value chain. The base of the new production system will be a carbon free, highly metallized DRI-product. |
