Abstract Scope |
Sustainable development in the 21st century is one of our grandest challenges that we face on the planet earth. From a materials centric perspective, it is a multidimensional, fuzzy, and messy problem. Why? Because we need to address how we produce the metal and materials that we need (steel, Al, cement, etc.); the carbon footprint and energy usage of these processes; the production waste that is generated; circularity of the materials we produce that includes repair, refurbish, and remanufacture; governmental policies that influence human behavior as well as the rules of engagement of the commercial sector and corporations. In this presentation the focus will be on production waste and post-consumer waste. Regarding production waste, the case study will be on cement production, and regarding post-consumer waste, the focus will be on end-of-life Aluminum, and Li-Ion batteries. Context, the technologies utilized, results, and commercialization will be presented and discussed. |
