Abstract Scope |
The wide adoption of wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), requires the development of customized equipment capable of controlling the grain structure and break the highly oriented and collumnar grains that easily form during this process.
Since the technology is based on conventional welding sources there is a need for developing specific add-ons that can aid in controlling and tuning the microstructure. Here, two different process variants, one for the introduction of high temperatures particles to act as nucleation point and refine the grain structure, and another for heat source movement so that the solidification from it broken repetitvely allowing also for grain refinement.
These variants are applied to Inconel 718 and AZ31 alloys and advanced microstructure characterization is used to rationalize the role of processing conditions on the mechanical performance. |
