Abstract Scope Solid-state additive manufacturing (SSAM) enables a defect-free solid build with a refined, equiaxed, and wrought-like microstructure at higher build rates compared to fusion-based AM. A novel SolidStir® AM technique is introduced in the current work and applied to Ce-containing aluminum alloys such as Al15Ce-1Zr and Al-9Cu-6Ce-3Zr. Post-process microstructure characterization revealed significant breakdown of Ce-rich and Zr-rich particles after SolidStir® AM, and improvement in the mechanical properties of the build. The SSAM process resulted in a refined equiaxed grain and intermetallic particle microstructure. The effect of post-process heat treatment on the precipitation kinetics and the influence on mechanical properties will be addressed. Advantages of SolidStir® AM against the existing state of the art solid-state AM techniques will be discussed based on the microstructure and mechanical properties.
