Abstract Scope |
Currently, much of materials and manufacturing research focuses on optimizing a material's structure for a specific function and assembling diverse materials into multifunctional devices, following a one material-one function/property paradigm. Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a transformative technology for the fabrication of complex, customized parts. While most efforts have focused on minimizing manufacturing defects, our group explores process control and composition to locally tailor the properties of 3D printed metals and alloys, enabling the move beyond the one material-one function/property paradigm. This talk discusses our recent progress in designing functionally graded materials (FGMs) and our work on metal 4D printing for spatial control of transformation characteristics, concluding with future research directions and novel approaches to multi-material design to address challenging material design trade-offs. |
