Abstract Scope |
The broad alloy definition for Multi-Principal Element Alloys (MPEAs) allows for superior tunability of desirable properties and microstructure via alloying control; however, it also makes discovery and development challenging, as conventional synthesis and characterization techniques are prohibitively slow and costly when applied to large compositional spaces. This work demonstrates how combinatorial magnetron co-sputtering can be used to generate compositionally graded samples, enabling the study of hundreds of MPEA arrangements in an accelerated fashion. Coupling the combinatorial synthesis method with high-throughput characterization, including EDS, XRD, SEM and nanoindentation, allows for the development of composition-structure-property maps, thereby driving alloy discovery and delivering insights on the fundamental science of elemental interactions in complex alloys. |
