Abstract Scope |
Aluminum is particularly appealing as a potential lithium-ion battery anode material as it satisfies many essential criteria for electrodes, both with respect to performance and sustainability. Not only does Al possess a low density and a low equilibrium potential vs. Li/Li+, but practically, a long history of foil manufacturing together with the close relation to LIB industry (i.e., cathode current collector) make Al foils even more promising. Unfortunately, the depth of knowledge concerning the degradation mechanisms of aluminum-based electrodes is still scarce, but many signs point to kinetic constraints as the primary governor of reversible phase transformations. In this work, progress towards understanding aluminum and aluminum-alloy anode evolution for future LIBs will be discussed with both experimental and theoretical support. |
