Abstract Scope |
Material Extrusion (MEX) technology has improved significantly over recent years due to an increase in fundamental studies focused on understanding the material-process relationship. Several research papers have used IR thermal cameras to model the thermal profile of the extrudate at the nozzle in order to understand the layer to layer bonding. Whilst standard engineering polymers are controlled primarily by the nozzle temperature and printing speed, high-temperature-high-performance polymers have a more complex thermal profile, being additionally influenced by the bed and chamber temperature. Printing high performance polymers generates the desire to enhance and tailor their performance by adding fibres and fillers. However, very little is known of their thermal and rheological behaviour in comparison with their equivalent plain polymer grades. This study presents the printing thermal models and rheological data of several PAEK reinforced grades used in MEX and their influence on the interlayer bonding. |
