Abstract Scope Precise measurement and characterization of the thermal properties of mold materials is important for casting operations/modeling. In this study, we utilized a simple plate mold to determine the thermal properties of mold materials. This was accomplished by measuring the change in centerline location of the cast part as one side of the plate mold is exchanged while keeping the other side of the mold constant with a well know and well characterized material. This experimental setup was also utilized to determine the effect of mold coating on the thermal diffusion of the casting.
