Abstract Scope The complexity of intertwined interfacial reactions and the heterogeneous distribution of chemical composition and microstructural features significantly influence surface corrosion reactivity. Understanding the localized electrochemical corrosion properties is critically important to identifying the origin of corrosion and developing next-generation metals and metal alloys with superior corrosion resistance. In this work, we developed scanning electrochemical cell impedance microscopy (SECCIM) by combining SECCM with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and explored the unique advantages of using SECCIM to measure the location-specific corrosion in the interfacial region of dissimilar alloys prepared using the Friction-stir Assisted Scribe Technique processes. Furthermore, SECCIM is combined with a microspectroscopy platform (e.g., fluorescence, Raman) to achieve spatially resolved correlative mapping of both electrochemical activity and the chemical signature of intermediate species at reactive interfaces, thereby providing a powerful new methodology to characterize technologically relevant surfaces.
