Abstract Scope |
High-entropy materials (HEMs) show the novel structural and functional properties due to their multi-elemental compositions. However, they are burdened by cost-, energy- and carbon-intensive extraction, synthesis, and manufacturing. Recycling and reuse of the HEMs are challenging because of the high fractions of the expensive and limited elements in massive solid solutions, for instance, cobalt, nickel. Here, several HEMs with multifunctionality have been fabricated in a sustainable way by secondary synthesis using low-cost feedstocks with the high impurity levels. The microstructure and properties of the HEMs are compared with the reference materials by primary synthesis using metallic materials with the high purity. High-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) has been applied to observe the interfacial phenomenon as well as the formation of impurity particle behaviors in the liquid metals. This work contributes to the ‘impurity engineering’ in the advanced HEMs manufactured by the sustainable solutions. |
