Abstract Scope |
The ability to control microstructure during additive manufacturing is challenging due to the limitations of solidification conditions, and software restrictions. To overcome these issues, alloys such as Al-Ce-Cu-Zr have been specifically designed to minimize processing-related defects and depend on solidification-sensitive microstructure (eutectics). The current work focuses on an Al-Ce-Cu-1.8Zr (wt. %) alloy, primarily solidifying as a eutectic in AM that presents an opportunity to directly control the eutectic spacing by manipulating the solidification velocity in laser powder bed fusion. Two different parameter sets are developed with fixed laser velocities of 100 and 1000 mm/s to achieve variations. The developed parameters are tested separately and intermixed to understand the role of processing on mechanical properties. In this talk, solidification velocities are intentionally changed to manipulate local mechanical properties, the consequence of this manipulation is discussed, and the microstructure is characterized using transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. |
