Abstract Scope |
Electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) is capable of rapid beam deflection, creating new opportunities for processing and microstructural control. Since traditional scan strategies such as rastering or spot melting are parametrized by the movement of the beam, including scan order, optimizing proves challenging due to a large, discretized decision space. However, the fact that electron beam motion can outpace thermal conduction allows for it to be conceptualized not as a sequence of beam motions, but as the imposition of a near-arbitrary power field over the part surface.
In this work, we formulate microstructural control in EB-PBF as an optimal control problem, with the power field as the decision variable. We implement a GPU accelerated trajectory optimization routine to efficiently solve this problem and demonstrate control in simulation. We then validate these results experimentally. These results support a fundamental shift in thinking about process design for EB-PBF AM. |
