Abstract Scope |
Novel alloys for biomedical application can benefit from the unique environment provided by additive manufacturing (AM). Obviously, the unprecedented geometrical complexity of AM parts is a key factor in this field, eventually allowing for production of patient specific implants. Furthermore, corrosion properties and biocompatibility, respectively, can be optimized through apt alloy design. Such considerations guided the development of Ti-Nb-Ta alloys.
However, AM does not only allow to realize components of unprecedented geometrical complexity, but also enables to establish unique microstructures. Key toward direct microstructure design is the thermal history of the part in focus. The present study focuses on the establishment of solid process-microstructure-property relationships in Ti-Nb-Ta biomedical alloys. Pre-alloyed powders are used in laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M). It is shown that both chemical composition and process parameters in PBF-LB/M allow to set the initial microstructure of the alloy in focus. |
