Abstract Scope |
Engineering microstructural gradation is a popular design approach for realizing a good combination of strength and strain hardening at high rates of deformation in metallic materials. Additive manufacturing-based processing techniques appear ideal for implementing such an approach with numerous benefits such as reduced material waste, ease of achieving precise geometry and compositional layering, fast turnaround time, etc. Accordingly, the objective of the study is to realize a compositionally graded material using the laser-based Direct Energy Deposition (DED) technique. The compositional gradient ranging from pure Fe to Fe-15wt%Mn was achieved. Prior to depositing compositionally graded material, the single compositional builds of Fe-5wt%Mn, Fe-10wt%Mn, and Fe-15wt%Mn were studied to achieve a relative bulk density of 99.9%. X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques have been used to investigate the as built and deformed specimens. |
