Abstract Scope |
The huge potential of microstructural engineering, used for decades in conventional manufacturing, has not yet been extensively explored for AM. This presentation will focus on possibilities for microstructural changes in simple standard AM metals (316L, AlSiMg, 17-4 PH and more) as a function of laser pulse modulation, beam shape variations, build plate temperature and thermomechanical processing either in-situ while printing or post-print. Additionally results for multilayered AM samples will be presented. While the main focus is on electron microscopy characterizations, also results from non-destructive 3D X-ray imaging are included. The presentation will be in the form of case stories including effects of: beam shape and inclination on grain microstructure in 316L, laser pulsing on phase distribution in 17-4 PH, annealing on Si network/particle evolution in AlSiMg and on recrystallization kinetics in 316L, and finally post-print shot peening on mechanical properties of AlSiMg |
