Abstract Scope |
Peritectic equilibria, found in alloys like steel, high Tc superconductors, and rare earth magnets, involve the transformation of a liquid phase (L) and a primary solid (𝜀) into a peritectic solid (η). Understanding peritectic systems is challenging due to varied growth modes and difficulties in interpreting interfacial morphologies from 2D images. This study explores two-phase peritectic microstructures at high solidification rates using laser surface re-melting (LSR).
Focusing on the Zn-Ag peritectic system, we form structures of primary 𝜖-AgZn3 and peritectic Zn. We utilize synchrotron-based x-ray nano-tomography and hard x-ray nanoprobe imaging to analyse 3D microstructures, providing detailed insights into interfaces and compositions. TEM and TKD capture crystallographic data. The techniques reveal periodic lamellar microstructures at the nanoscale (approximately ~600nm), offering new insights into peritectic alloy design, especially for structural applications. |
