Abstract Scope |
The optimisation process in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) involves intricate dynamics between melt pool behaviour, plume formation, and particle interactions. We analyse these phenomena via in-situ dual-modal imaging, enabled by coaxial synchrotron X-ray transmission and schlieren imaging. Our results visualise the interplay of four phases of matter, showing that unstable melt pool regimes can be measured by both techniques. The application of high-speed schlieren imaging as a standalone technique for assessing melt pool stability under a range of energy inputs is explored. These findings are further enhanced by in-situ long-standoff microscopy, conducted under identical conditions, providing an additional perspective on the dynamics of the melt pool. Image processing as well as metallurgical analysis are employed to measure melt pool dimensions, characterise heat transfer, and derive stable operating limits. The versatility and validity of our approach is assessed using a variety of materials including Ti-6Al-4V, Al6082, In625 and SS316. |
