Abstract Scope |
Adding nanoparticles can significantly affect the solidification process to refine the grains of metals. However, the mechanism for the nanoparticle-induced grain refinement is still unclear. It is hard to study the mechanisms by postmortem analysis because post analysis cannot capture the critical information of crystal evolution during the solidification. Here, we performed the in-situ x-ray diffraction experiment to uncover the effects of TiC nanoparticles on the solidification dynamics during the laser melting process of aluminum alloy. In-situ x-ray diffraction clearly captured that adding nanoparticles can refine the grains. The mechanism for nanoparticle-induced grain refinement was discussed based on the in-depth in-situ diffraction analysis. The stable TiC nanoparticles through the melting-solidification process during the in-situ diffraction experiment also enable us to capture the important temperature information, including the cooling rate, during the solidification. Our research provides critical insights of effects of nanoparticles on the solidification dynamics during laser melting processes. |
