We report on the effects of composition inhomogeneity, arising from spinodal/spinodal-like decomposition, on hardening in inhomogeneous alloys from a single dislocation perspective as well as from the perspective of their collective dynamics, with BCC FeCrAl as model material system. Cahn’s theory of spinodal strengthening is revisited to account for its superposition with solid solution strengthening to study strengthening from a single dislocation perspective. A pseudo-dynamics approach is utilized to determine critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) in inhomogeneous alloys. A new definition for incremental CRSS (ΔCRSS) is provided to better represent solid solution strengthening in inhomogeneous alloys relative to homogeneous alloys. We observed negative values of ΔCRSS for screw dislocations indicating lower resistance to move screw dislocation in BCC alloys. From the perspective of collective dynamics of dislocations, we observe a significant increase in dislocation density in sinusoidal composition fluctuation fields in inhomogeneous alloys which is discussed from a statistical perspective. |
