Abstract Scope |
Our recent studies on high-entropy alloys with nanoscale chemical modulation (Nature, 574, 223-227, 2019) and dual-phase nanolamellar structures (Nature, 608, 62–68, 2022), along with several other heterogeneous materials, raise fundamental questions regarding the role of highly complex microstructural heterogeneities in controlling the mechanical behavior of these novel material systems. We employ of a combination of mechanics modeling and experimental characterization to investigate the extra strengthening effects of compositional fluctuations and microstructural gradients. We quantitatively compare the modeling and experimental results, emphasizing the often overlooked concepts of different types of back-stress hardening and distinct stages of extra hardening arising from highly complex microstructural heterogeneities. Through these investigations, we gain mechanistic insights to further enhance the strength-ductility synergy in the design of high-entropy alloys. |
