Abstract Scope |
Ordering, decomposition and coherent nanoprecipitates significantly increase the yield strength of Al-containing weight-reduced high-Mn steels. Understanding their impact on the mechanical performance requires detailed atomistic observation with correlative atom probe tomography and electron microscopy as well as simulations of their thermodynamic stability, chemical composition and interfaces with the adjacent matrix. These factors influence the interaction with dislocations and solutes and hence determine yield strength, strain hardening and damage behaviour. The results can explain the dynamical slip band refinement mechanism, nano-carbide superstructures, tetragonally deformed shear channels in the fcc matrix and the shearing of the microstructure by dislocations. In this way, a close link between local chemistry and mechanical performance of high-Mn lightweight steels is demonstrated. |
