Oxides are often placed into service under conditions that drive them far from equilibrium. In many cases, it is critical to understand how the non-equilibrium defects often generated in such scenarios move through the lattice, modify the structure, and impact the overall transport characteristics of the material. Not only do these defects change the characteristics of transport, but they couple with the cation distributions in the material, often leading to a synergistic relationship between the chemical order in the material and defect migration. Further, in some cases chemical disorder enhances transport while in others it reduces it, demonstrating the complex relationship between them. In multiple projects, we have been using a combination of experiment and computational modeling to identify fundamental mechanisms associated with non-equilibrium ionic transport in a range of oxide structures. I will highlight key results and some general insight we have gleaned from our efforts. |
