Abstract Scope |
Short-range ordering (SRO) is a phenomenon in nominally disordered solid solutions in which different types of atoms are correlated in a non-random fashion. SRO has been shown to impact properties such as dislocation behavior and corrosion resistance in metallic alloys, but the kinetics of SRO is usually difficult to predict. In this talk we present results of a mean-field kinetic model compared to kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations of SRO kinetics in a model equiatomic NbMoTa alloy. We find that the mean-field kinetic model provides results comparable to kMC simulations, while circumventing the computational expense of the latter. The mean-field kinetic model requires simple parameterization that can be obtained from knowledge of the equilibrium SRO state as well as experimentally assessed mobility databases. This model is generalizable to any arbitrary number of components and is expected to aid in the design of processing conditions to promote or suppress SRO. |
