Presentation Title Exploring the Particle-substrate Interface in Cold Spray Applications via Single Particle Impacts

Abstract Scope In cold spray additive manufacturing, powder particles are accelerated to supersonic velocities to plastically deform and bond upon impacting a substrate. Fundamental understanding of metallic bonding at the substrate-particle interface is crucial for evaluating engineering performance of the fabricated parts. The laser-induced particle impact test (LIPIT), a compact optical setup, allows us to deconstruct this complex process and focus on single particle impacts. Such single-particle experiments generally reveal poor bonding at the particle-substrate interface, yet cold-sprayed coatings appear to be well-adhered. This work addresses this discrepancy by exploring experimental variables that may influence bond development, using advanced microscopy techniques and LIPIT for copper-on-copper impacts. In support of this goal, we develop new quantitative assessments for the fraction of area that is bonded and then explore how process conditions affect the bonded area.
