Presentation Title Improved Performance of Stainless Steels with Low Temperature Surface Hardening

On-Site Speaker (Planned) Temitope Oluwafemi
Abstract Scope Low temperature surface hardening, also known at Kolsterising®, can significantly increase the surface hardness of various alloys while maintaining their corrosion resistance*. The treatment temperature utilized is low enough to achieve a precipitation free diffusion zone while still high enough to create a diffusion layer deep enough to increase fatigue resistance. The improvement in various mechanical properties is made possible by the presence of compressive stresses at not only the surface of the treated material, but towards the base material as well. For example, rotating bending fatigue tests showed that fatigue strength is positively influenced by a factor of 10 due to the introduced residual compressive stresses. Improvements were also seen after abrasion and adhesion testing. This presentation will review what Kolsterising® is and how the process has been able to improve the life of various parts across an array of industries.
