Abstract Scope Bearing is one of the important components of any machine which mostly uses AISI 8620 steel for making it. It requires high hardness and wear-resistant surface properties in their service condition. Tungsten inert gas arcing is one excellent and emerging technique used as a heat source to modify the surface. It remelts the selective layer of the surface under a shielding environment. During remelting, Tantalum carbide (TaC) is introduced in the molten pool as an in-situ reinforcement particle to form the hardened secondary phase within the matrix. The modified surface, consisting of lath shape martensite phase with TaC precipitates, was characterized by various techniques. The combined effect of the martensite phase with in-situ grown TaC precipitate significantly increases the hardness and wear resistance of the modified surface and decreases residual stress with respect to the base metal.
