Abstract Scope In this work, we report our findings in the research conducted to improve the surface integrity of TRIP steel by means of a boronizing process. Experiments were conducted according to a Central Composite Design of Experiments Methodology (DoE). Temperature and time were selected as input factors, while hardness and corrosion resistance were analyzed as response variables. Micrographs confirmed the formation of a subsurface layer with a thickness around 250 μm, X-ray diffraction showed the formation of Fe-B compounds, and metallography exhibited a grain refinement. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) showed that temperature in the key factor in modifying the surface properties. The better experimental conditions improved the hardness from 228.3 HV to 2,377.5 HV (more than 10 times) and the corrosion resistance improved with respect to control samples. Results confirm that boronizing is a process capable of improve the surface integrity of TRIP steel.
