Abstract Scope Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) has been traditionally utilized to create gradient nanograin structures that improve strength while maintaining reasonable ductility. Recent work has highlighted that partial SMAT coverage has a similar strengthening effect while providing even higher ductility. The methods used to create this partial coverage rely on randomized impact energies, trajectories, and spacings that obscures the mechanisms. We have developed methods that allow us to precisely control the position and energy of impacts for studying strengthening phenomena and that are fully scalable to commercial processing. The benefits of this approach include removing randomness and allowing direct correlation of impact conditions to mechanical performance for component production as well as fundamental studies. We have even observed enhancement of catalytic activity through impact conditioning, and the various aspects of structural and functional performance will be discussed.
