Abstract Scope Microstructure evolution during thermal processing of low density steel was evaluated using the laser ultrasonic method (LUMET ™) on a series 3800 Gleeble and compared with dilatometry and synchrotron diffraction results. A wrought Fe-30Mn-9Al-1C-1Si alloy was thermally processed using a solution treat and quench at over a range of temperatures (950-1100 C) to evaluate kappa-carbide dissolution and grain growth. Precipitation treatment was further performed for controlled k-carbide formation. The efficacy of the LUMET system to monitor these microstructure changes in-situ is compared with dilatometry and synchrotron diffraction. Ex situ microscopy and hardness testing are also used to validate results.
