Abstract Scope |
Batteries used in E-mobility applications typically utilize stacks of copper foils and aluminum foils, internal to the battery. Dozens to well over one hundred layers of foils less than 0.001-in. thick provides a unique joining challenge. A large-area weld is required to minimize current crowing and hot spots. No fillers are allowed as these would affect the battery chemistry, and some joining processes risk burn-through and production of debris. Both of these have been proven to cause battery performance issues.
EWI investigated high-speed capacitor discharge resistance welding, to address the issues described above. Successful welds were made in several types of copper foil stacks. The approach to weld development, welding results, and metallurgical analyses will be discussed. Plans for follow-on work with other materials will be presented. |
