Abstract Scope |
We recently introduced a new UV-based photopolymerization 3D printing process exploiting a continuous liquid interface—the deadzone—mechanically fed with resin at elevated pressures through microfluidic channels dynamically created and integral to the growing part. Through such mass transport control, injection continuous liquid interface production (iCLIP) ameliorates suction forces plaguing traditional vat photopolymerization (VP) techniques, and can readily pattern a single heterogeneous object with different resins in all Cartesian coordinates. Herein, we describe a design methodology for engineering these ducts within an arbitrary part, and an automated algorithmic workflow for doing so parametrically. The goals we optimize for in this novel printing process are (a) alleviating print failures due to suction forces that severely plague traditional VP techniques, and (b) achieving multimaterial gradients in printed parts impossible with traditional VP methods, for applications in functionally graded lattice structures and versatile soft robotic actuators. |
