Presentation Title Microstructure-Property Relationship for Hot Deformed Fine-grained NdFeB Magnet with High Magnetic Properties Through Two-step Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract Scope Hot-deformed Nd2Fe14B-based magnets have attracted much research interest due to its potential high coercivity while eliminating heavy rare earth (HREE) elements. Conventional melt-spun HREE-free Nd-Fe-B ribbons with an isotropic nanograin (~50 nm) are used to manufacture hot-deformed anisotropic NdFeB magnets. It was found that controlling abnormal grain growth and achieving a high aspect ratio of fine-grains during hot deformation is critical to obtaining both high coercivity and (BH) max. In our study, we developed a novel two-step process using spark plasma sintering (SPS) to manufacture high-performance magnets. Nd-Fe-B ribbons were first highly densified by a novel cold sintering at 350 °C and 300 MPa to preserve the nanosized grains. The bulk was then quickly hot-deformed at 710 °C until fully densified, resulting in an anisotropic fine plate-like grain microstructure. The magnet obtained an intrinsic coercivity Hci of 11.2 kOe, remanence Br of 14.2 kGs, and a (BH) maxof 47 MGOe.
