Abstract Scope |
MnFe(P,Si) are promising materials for magnetocaloric or thermomagnetic energy applications. So far, they have been studied almost exclusively in polycrystals, which can be limiting for investigating some aspects of their first-order magnetoelastic transition. Here, we report on a crystal growth optimization to obtain ferromagnetic single crystals. These crystals exhibit a unique magnetic response with discontinuous magnetization steps induced by temperature or magnetic field. In addition to providing more details on the evolution of the transition as a function of the driving parameter, these crystals open up new possibilities. For instance, they can be used for x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) experiments that provide insights into the electronic structure changes at Mn, Fe and P K-edges. X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) has also been performed on the crystals to experimentally estimate the local magnetic moments across the transition and address the possibility of a moment instability at the 3f site. |
