Abstract Scope |
Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets have excellent magnetic properties and have been used in various energy-related applications. However, excessive quantities of these magnets are being scrapped needlessly due to a lack of understanding of unacceptable internal defects and structural inhomogeneity distribution. We developed a cost-effective and efficient nondestructive ultrasonic testing (UT) technique for detecting and characterizing internal defects in Sm-Co sintered magnets. The UT technique allows us to comprehensively analyze the magnet’s internal defects, such as inclusions, porosity, microcracks, and microstructural anomalous regions. It can effectively guide magnet quality control and selection. This technology can be integrated with existing manufacturing processes. It may also advance magnet additive manufacturing technology. In this talk, the relationship between the Sm-Co magnets' microstructure, internal defects, and magnetic properties will be discussed. |
