The FeNiCoTaAl (fcc), and FeCoAlCu (bcc) melt-spun ribbons have been investigated using high-energy synchrotron diffraction and high-resolution TEM. Both systems show very promising properties with a good balance of magnetic and mechanical ones. The common ground for both alloy systems is precipitation hardening which significantly increases strength at the same time to minimal domain wall pinning. The melt-spinning process is used to refine the microstructure and to produce metastable, disorder phases. Subsequently, heat treatment is used to initiate the precipitation process, chemical ordering, stress relief and grain growth. This in turn allows for tailoring the microstructure, chemical order, and precipitation hardening by different heat treatments in a very systematic way. The results are also discussed concerning crystallographic texture showing the nucleation, growth and coarsening of second-phase particles from a metastable supersaturated solid solution. As a result, a very useful design strategy for obtaining high-performance soft magnetic alloys is proposed. |
