Abstract Scope |
Striving to reduce CO2 emission and fight global warming increases the use of green technologies for transportation, power generation etc. and is closely linked to the availability of suitable magnetic materials. Many magnetic materials applied in these technologies rely on rare earths or other critical elements which presents a significant problem. To address this issue our goal is to find new magnetic materials that possess the functionality of current ones but with a smaller environmental footprint. We focus on existing but magnetically unexplored materials and investigate their potential for application as permanent magnet or for magnetic refrigeration. Our approach combines the screening of large data bases with high-throughput ab initio calculations. These ab initio methods have proven to be accurate and powerful tools for predicting and describing materials properties. In this talk, cases studies for rare-earth free permanent magnets and magnetocaloric materials for magnetic refrigeration will be presented. |
