Abstract Scope |
The recent demand for electric machinery used in energy generation and electrified transportation will worsen the strain on critical heavy rare earth element supply stability. Novel methods are needed to efficiently use these critical elements that are key to the energy density and thermal stability performance of bulk NdFeB-based permanent magnets systems. Optimized design of motor architecture for traction-based electric vehicles typically has been limited by the ability to accurately represent permanent magnet behavior using finite-element methods. This work describes advances in informed motor design, coupling microstructural and motor multi-physics models. This approach creates the opportunity to design motor specific permanent magnets architectures. These tools enable rapid design of motor architecture to reduce dependence on heavy rare earth elements while maintaining a high resistance against demagnetization. In this talk, we discuss how modeling guides permanent magnet fabrication and how motor-level impacts result from changes at the microstructure-level. |
