Abstract Scope Precision glass molding (PGM) is a cutting-edge manufacturing technology for high-volume, precision glass components. However, developing coatings with improved oxidation resistance and anti-sticking properties for molds used with glasses having high glass transition temperatures (Tg) is a persistent challenge. . This study evaluates the performance of Ru‒Cr nanolayers as protective coatings for PGM. We investigate the use of a thermally grown chromium oxide surface as an anti-stick mold surface. By employing Ru as a diffusion barrier, we stabilize the growth process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis demonstrates that increased Ru thickness in Ru-Cr coatings inhibits outward Cr diffusion, resulting in a thin and stable oxide surface that resists adhesion to glass at 750 C. The critical Ru thickness exceeds 600 nm, while below this threshold, the growth of Cr-oxide produces wavy surfaces with non-monotonic scale thickness variations based on Ru thickness.
