Abstract Scope This research investigates the deposition process and evaluates the properties of a binary layer ceramic coating on an aluminum metal matrix composite (AMC) using magnetron sputtering. The coating structure consists of two layers: an initial layer of zirconium nitride (ZrN) and a subsequent layer of two-dimensional Molybdenum di-selenide (2D MoSe2). The mechanical and corrosion behavior of deposited coating is expounded, providing valuable insights into its potential applications and performance. Techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are employed to study the structural and morphological properties. The corrosion resistance is assessed through electrochemical measurements. The results indicate that the coatings exhibit improved wear performance, structural integrity, and corrosion-resistance compared to the uncoated or only TiN coated samples. These findings highlight the promising potential of the binary layer ceramic coating for enhancing the functionality and durability of the AMC substrate.
