Abstract Scope In recent decades, research into alternative Cu alloys that could replace Cu-Be alloys is taking place due mainly to the toxicity of the Cu-Be alloys. To that end, various Cu-Ni-Sn alloys have been investigated and have received widespread attention. Among these alloys, Cu-15Ni-8Sn (UNS C72900) has the best mechanical properties and wear resistance and could potentially replace the Cu-Be alloys. In this investigation, Cu-15Ni-8Sn rods of 3 mm diameter were successfully fabricated via friction extrusion at various die temperatures. Friction extrusion imparts severe strain thereby resulting in high temperature leading to grain size and second phase refinement. Below solvus, Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloys typically exhibit temperature dependent phase evolution. Therefore, microstructural analysis of the as-extruded rods as a function of die temperature was carried out and compared with the conventionally processed Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy. Furthermore, microstructural, and mechanical property analysis of the post heat treated rods were completed.
